PROFILE OF PATRICK NAGA LIPUDI (COUNCIL WHIP)
Clr Patrick Lipudi has been in active politics since the 1980s as a young student leader under the Bophuthatswana Government. Amongst the highlights of this period in his life is Lipudi’s role as a leader of a class boycott against propaganda education content in 1985.
Clr Lipudi started his formal employment in the manufacturing Industry where he spent four years before moving into Development facilitation work under the then Krugersdorp Council. Whilst in the manufacturing sector, Lipudi rose to positions of leadership in the union sector for SACCAWU at shop floor level including being Deputy Secretary of the West Rand Workers Forum in 1992. His activism and leadership qualities demonstrated within the community at the same time, earned him the position of Branch Secretary for the ANC’s Lanwen Branch as well as being a Residents’ Committee member and later Chairperson of the said Residents’ Committee for a long period. He later became the Chairperson of the ANC Lanwen Branch for a longer period as well.
Whilst still pursuing politics, Clr Lipudi’s passion for community development saw him become an LDO Consultant for the then Krugersdorp Council in 1997. In this role, he had to inter alia do community mobilisation, identify and monitor projects to be implemented in the communities and represent communities in Municipal meetings to ensure that their needs were accommodated by the Municipality. This role also gave him the privilege of being at the centre of local transformation of South Africa in what was then the transitional local council era. He played a pivotal role to coordinate Masakhane campaign as Council Manager for Community Liaison and SMMEs
During the same period Lipudi was elected to the ANC’s West Rand Regional Executive Committee as a member and later elected Deputy Secretary in 1998, a position he held until 2001. From 2001 to 2008, Clr Lipudi held the position of Secretary for the ANC West Rand Region. Lipudi continue to serve as the member of the Regional Executive Committee. Due to his involvement and experience in ANC structures over a continuous period, Clr Lipudi was appointed Elections Coordinator for Lanwen during General Elections, Mogale City election Coordinator in 2000 local elections and again Elections Coordinator for Merafong City for the General Elections in 2009.
Lipudi participated in the SGBs of three schools during the period of 2000-2009 holding positions of Treasurer and Secretary at different times.
Lipudi first became a Councillor of the then Krugersdorp Council in 1994 until 1995, which is now Mogale City, and later a Member of the Mayoral Committee in the West Rand District Council responsible for Housing and then Infrastructure in 2008. Following the re-incorporation of Merafong into the West Rand District area, the position of Council Whip was conferred upon him in 2009. The Council Whip also brings to this position a strength of character honed through his commitment to the discipline of self management which involves the management of all aspects of one’s life and interaction with others.
Lipudi is an astute negotiator who had mediated in many rural evictions to save many families from being condemned to miserable life. He is a pragmatic person who holds a firm belief in the matching of words and actions to realise a tangible output.
