In 2005, Cllr Nawa completed his Masters Degree in Public Administration and Development at Wits University.  Since then, Cllr Nawa did a plethora of short courses in municipal governance.

Cllr Nawa joined the Christian movement in 1983 and in 1984, he became the first secretary of Mohlakeng Youth Congress but also held various positions in the Congress. From 1983 to 1986, Cllr Nawa joined the underground structures of the African National Congress. In 1987, he then became an assistant manager at ANC Stores in Tanzania.  Cllr Nawa was so active that he was elected in the National Executive Committee Member Student Union for Christian Action (SUCA) from 1989 till 1990. In 1995, he became the ANC Branch Executive Member and then in 1997 he graduated to being the Member of the Regional Executive Committee in West Rand from 1999 to 2001.  Cllr Nawa then became the Deputy Chairperson of the ANC West Rand Region from 2002 to 2007.  In 2008, he was elected the regional chairperson and is currently serving the position.

Cllr Nawa was elected as a Ward Councillor in 2000 and he became the first Speaker of the Randfontein Local Municipality from 2000 to 2003. Cllr Nawa was then appointed as the Finance Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) at the Randfontein Local Municipality from 2006 to 2008 and was also the Chief Whip from 2006 to 2009.  In 2009, he was deployed to the West Rand District Municipality where he became the Local Economic Development MMC.  In 2010, he became the Executive Mayor and is also serving as the National Deputy Chairperson of SALGA.
