The WRDM embarked on an initiative to establish a municipal entity known as the
West Rand Development Agency (WRDA), which will be used as a special purpose
vehicle to manage and implement key strategic economic development projects in
its area of jusrisdiction.
This initiative was made possible through funding by the WRDM, USAID and the
Industrial Development Corporation and in partnership with the three local
municipalities within the West Rand District. The primary role of the WRDA is to
act as the economic development agent for the West Rand in so far as to
stimulate, facilitate, implement and support economic development and job
creation projects and initiatives that will contribute to the regional economic
development.
A Growth and Development Summit was held in October 2006 at Maropeng, the theme

development. The strategy, which aims to increase the socio-economic
environment, identifying potential growth sectors, and providing alignment to
existing growth and development strategies.
The Directorate Transport places emphasis on Transport Operational Plans such as
management of service resources and compilation of transport contingency plans.
Focus will also be placed on the development of the Leratong Node as regional
transfer facility in support of a comprehensive public transport plan for West
Rand. The development of the Amakhosi Soccer Stadium in Mogale City lends itself
capable of becoming either a training facility and/or a Fan Park for FIFA World
Cup 2010 and will also facilitate opportunities to expand the existing road
network granting access to this facility.
The Directorate LED & Tourism has embarked on a project to star Grading of
Tourism Accomodation Establishment in the West Rand Area in partnership with the
