FUN GAMES FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
The District Municipality’s Disability Desk, in partnership with the West Rand Disability Forum, arranged games for people with disabilities in celebration of disability month. The games were held at Mohlakeng Recreation Center and were attended by more than sixty people with disabilities from Mogale City, Merafong City, Westonaria and Randfontein. The sporting codes that were played at the games were morabaraba, moroba, draughts and diketo.
The purpose of these games was to develop talent and also select candidates that would participate in the2013 National Disability Championship Games. The Municipality‘s Disability Desk Coordinator, Lungile Mdingi, emphasized the fact that it was important for people with disabilities to have this kind of games as they become rehabilitated through sport.
The West Rand District Disability Forum Chairperson, Moses Komane, encouraged people with Disabilities to advocate and take action for their needs. He further said that if they don’t stand up for their rights no one will. Komane wished all the players luck in their games as the winners were supposed to represent West Rand at the 2013 National Disability Championship Games.
The games were officiated by the Provincial Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture. Five winners were selected and they will be representing West Rand at the 2013 National Disability Championship Games. The venue and date is yet to be confirmed.
