Profile of Cllr. Johannah Phiri

Cllr Johanna Phiri has been active in politics since 2004. She was the convener of branch task team, recruiting members to join the African National Congress. She is the founder of the first ANC branch in the DistrictManagement Area (DMA), launched in 2005. In 2005 to 2006 she was elected as the chairperson of the DMA branch and was also elected as a Branch Election Team (BET) Coordinator to run elections, a position that she is holding to date.  In 2010, Cllr. Phiri was elected as a branch deputy Chairperson. She is also a member of Women’s League in good standing.  Cllr. Phiri is also the Regional Facilitator of Political EducationTraning Unit (PETU). She was elected as an ANC Regional ExecutiveCommittee (REC) member from 2008 to 2011 September.

Whilst still pursuing politics, Cllr Phiri’s passion for community development and leadership skills made her become a leader in different community organizations.  To mention just a few, in 1997she became anSGB Member for Matla Combined School in 1991 and a Youth Leader for Community Ministries.  Cllr Phiri also volunteered as a Pre-School teacher in Abundant Life Play with the Purpose at Muldersdrift in 2000. She is also a founding member of Interdenominational Women’s Fellowship. As someone that had passion on youth related issues.CllrPhiri became the Secretary of Lesedi Youth Association in Muldersdrift from 1999 to 2000.

In 1998-2004 she was a mentor and a counselor of ladies with various needs at Bethany House in Krugersdorp. She was also a Trustee member at Bethany House from 2009-2010. In 2006-2009 she was a Project Facilitator for Matla Early Child Development. Currently Cllr. Phiri is a trustee member at the Cradle of Humankind. In 2011 she was also elected as a reference committee member for Community Works Programme. Cllr. J.Phiri is also a board member atEvangeliEncha Drop in Centre in Kromdraai

Cllr. Phiri first became a councilor in 2006 to April 2011 as a DMA ward Cllr. She was also elected as the Acting Speaker in 2010, a position she currently holds as full time Speaker of the West Rand District Municipality. She was elected in this position in April 2011 after Local Government elections.  

During her term  as the PR Councillor in WRDM, she served in several section 80 committees stated as follows  Infrastructure, Health & Social Development, Housing, Rural development and Environment and Economic Development.  She was also a member of Section 79 committee Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC).

Academically Cllr J.Phiri completed her Matric in 1988, and further improved her qualifications at Western College for FET and studied her tertiary education in different colleges and Universities of Pretoria and UNISA. She did Professional Parenting Course with UNISA and in 1998 she enrolled with Damelin College where she did her Diploma in Office Administration and Diploma in Business English. In 2008 to 2009 June, she enrolled at the Western College FET where she studied an N4- N5 programme in Human Resource.

She also completed a Management course in 2008 at ASHA Training and Development Centre. In July 2007-April 2008, she also studied and completed a Municipal Management and Executive Leadership Municipality Development (ELMDP) programmes at University of Pretoria. She also did the community facilitation programme in 2008 at Siyakhula Trust. She also completed a regional political school course at Walter Sisulu Leadership Academy.  At DBSA Vulindlela Academy she did a Managing Computerized Data and Reports.

She is currently studying a course in Public Management (CPM) at Regenesys.
